Reading list

eviemcrae.blogAs a writer one of the most important (and most enjoyable) things you can do when you’re not writing, is reading. I love nothing more than having a stack of ‘ready to read’ books by my bedside. There’s nothing quite like that excitement of buying new books is there? If you’re lacking inspiration and would like some recommendations why not take a sneak peek at my  reading list. I’ve not written ‘reviews’ as such because it’s so subjective. Often times we read something at just the right moment in our lives and it means something to us. So with this in mind I’m not here to dictate that you read book based on literary merit. These just happen to be books I’ve enjoyed for one reason or another. I’ll add to this on a monthly basis so there’s no excuse for not keeping up-to-date with your reading material. Feel free to add your own comments, recommendations, and some thoughts on what you liked or disliked about the book.

The Bees

The Bees by Laline Paull was a must read for me. From the age of 9 I was an avid fan of Watership Down as my gerbils (Fiver and Hazel) will attest. Our heroine (Flora 777) changes her destiny and her world – and I’m all for that good stuff. If you think a story about …

The Secret River

The narrative of The Secret River is something we already know a lot about: convicts transported to Sydney, where they are eventually pardoned, and encouraged to settle what seemed to be an empty continent. For these new free settlers it comes as a surprise to find the land they claim for their own, is already …

The Alchemist

I couldn’t give you an overview of great books to read without giving you a sneak peek into one of my all time favourite books – The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho. I discovered Paulo Coelho during a period of reflection and soul searching, at a time when I was trying to figure out how to …
